Do I Need a Building Permit?

If you are thinking of doing some renovations in your home or even building a deck, we advise that you to call your municipality to inquire as to whether you will need a building permit. Chances are – you will!

If you are planning on renovating your kitchen or bathroom, you will need a permit so that you may bring your complete area up to code. You will need to hire an electrician to update outlets near water that do not have a Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI) in order to be in compliance.

If your home was built before this code existed, your outlets are grandfathered in, but as soon as you renovate you must comply with code.

When hiring a contractor to do work for you, be prepared to give them an initial deposit. Standard practice is to follow that up by two or three draws during specific stages of work that the contractor will determine ahead of time. Finally, a 10% holdback of the overall invoiced price until all of the work has been completed.
